The chart shows NASA GISS Surface Temperature Analysis (GISTEMP) global land anomalies on a 2° grid with 250 km smoothing, averaged to yearly values. Anomalies use the 1901-1930 reference in this extract (NASA often publishes anomalies vs. 1951–1980 in other products). Coverage: 1880–2026.
This series deliberately uses NASA GISTEMP’s land-only synthesis: only emerged land surfaces are averaged. Ocean grid cells are omitted from this global statistic. Seas slow down warming of the near-surface air because they absorb a large share of incoming heat—but that heat still accumulates in the water column, sea ice, currents, and the cryosphere.
The headline figure (+°C across the full timeline) summarizes the strengthening of that land signal over the observing period—the same decadal framing we use on city pages (mean anomaly in the first ten years minus the latest ten-year mean, anomaly baseline per the exported file, here 1901–1930). Combined land–ocean products often look comparatively mild across the twentieth century precisely because oceans damp year-to-year air swings even while they steadily warm.
Each point is NASA’s land temperature anomaly referenced to this file’s baseline (typically 1901–1930 in this extract); unusually warm years spike faster on land-only charts than blended global means.
